A major service for a petrol car can include, among other things:
Keep in mind that exact checks and changes will vary across vehicles. If you’ve noticed anything unusual when driving, tell your mechanic so they can investigate.
Get your car serviced every 6 months or 10,000 kilometres (whichever comes first). Waiting longer can mean that important components – like your tyres, brakes, clutch fluid, and oil – aren’t getting the attention they need. Older cars, in particular, should be regularly serviced for safety.
If your car is still under warranty, make sure you follow the service schedule in your logbook. Skipping services or performing DIY services at home can void any manufacturer warranties (as can using low-quality or second-hand parts).
A logbook service is delivered at certain intervals specified in your vehicle’s logbook. Most vehicles have specific checks that need to be undertaken during logbook services. Once a service has been completed, your mechanic will sign or stamp your logbook, which can help preserve your vehicle’s warranties.
‘Normal’ or general services fall into two buckets: minor services and major services. Minor services take place every 10,000 kilometres or so include checking things like your oil, brakes, lights, tyres, and suspension. Major services take place every 100,000 kilometres or so and are more comprehensive, covering transmission oil changes, spark plug replacements, differential services, and other important checks.
Logbook services and general services are very similar. The big differences are that logbook services help maintain your vehicle’s warranties and must include manufacturer-specified checks and changes.
Getting your oil changed every 6 months can seem like a waste of money – if you don’t know the role it plays in your car’s performance.
Motor oil is a lubricant. It acts a bit like the blood in your body. Your oil pump moves oil from the sump (a storage container that sits under your crankshaft) through oil galleries that run through your car’s engine. As the oil passes through, it coats moving engine parts, which helps reduce friction and remove heat. Once the oil goes back into the sump, it’s recirculated – but not before passing through your oil filter, which helps remove impurities picked up during its journey.
Over time, a small amount of oil will evaporate, but oil levels drop faster in older vehicles as the piston rings wear and tear. (Leaks can also cause rapid drops.) Insufficient oil and dirty oil can both seriously damage your engine, which is why it’s important to replace your oil and your oil filter every 6 months or so. If you don’t, you could see decreased fuel efficiency, faster component wear, or, worse, engine overheating and breakdown.
