Power steering isn’t part of your vehicle’s suspension – but it is closely linked.
If your steering wheel is hard to turn, feels jerky or sloppy, or vibrates, it could indicate a problem with one or both systems.
Our mobile mechanics conduct power steering inspections as part of a standard suspension check.
Common repairs include changing power steering fluid, fixing broken belts, and, for electric/hybrid systems, replacing the EPS motor.

The most common suspension issue we see is worn shock absorbers (also known as ‘dampeners’). South East Queensland roads can be rough – as your vehicle ages, the ability of your shocks to dampen road impacts decreases.
Telescopic shocks – the kind found on most cars – are basically hollow tubes filled with absorber oil and pistons. When your car hits a bump in the road, the pistons compress the oil; small holes in the pistons allow some oil to flow through, while other oil gets pushed through the base valve into the oil reserve. The viscosity of the oil means that the speed of the pistons slows the more the oil is compressed, which helps keep your ride feeling smooth.
Over time, absorber oil degrades, losing viscosity – which equals a bumpier ride. Your shocks themselves can also wear out through general use, heat, and rough road conditions, which can lead to them leaking oil. (If your shocks look shiny or greasy, give us a call – they probably need replacing.)
Yes, it’s still technically possible to drive with certain suspension issues, but you shouldn’t. Even ‘minor’ problems, like worn shocks, can lead to more wear and tear across the rest of your vehicle.
More serious issues, like broken shocks or struts, can mean that your vehicle is unsafe to drive at all. At best, you’ll create more damage and increase your repair bill. At worst, you’ll hurt yourself – or someone else.
If you think there might be something wrong with your suspension, give us a call. One of our mobile mechanics will come directly to your vehicle, and, with same-day and emergency bookings available, it won’t be long before you’re back on the road.
Replacing certain parts of your suspension, such as worn shocks or bushings, is almost always a good idea. They’re cheap, easy to install, and improve both your driving experience and on-road safety.
If your suspension is seriously damaged, a full replacement of all parts – shocks, springs, control arms, sway bars, ball joints – will cost thousands of dollars, which, for older cars, might not be financially ‘worth it’. You can ask one of our mobile mechanics what they think during your suspension inspection.
Your suspension isn’t like your engine or transmission. The entire suspension system won’t ‘go out’ or break when you’re driving. Instead, one of two things is likely:
So what does a component failing feel like when you’re behind the wheel? Well, it varies. A broken ball joint might cause clunking or drifting steering. A broken strut might cause bouncing, ‘floating’, loss of steering control, and sagging. It really depends on the broken component(s) and the extent of the damage.
If you notice a change in your car’s handling or posture, don’t gamble with your safety. Call a mobile mechanic, get a diagnosis, and get the problem repaired.
