Mobile Roadworthy Certificates Queensland

Selling your car, bike, caravan or trailer?

Moving to Queensland from another state?

Under Queensland law, you need a roadworthy certificate (legally known as a ‘safety certificate’) to transfer your registration.

It’s a document that proves your vehicle is safe to drive/tow on the road – and, without one, you could be fined over $700.

Luckily, getting certified isn’t hard.

Our approved examiners can inspect your vehicle in any safe location across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, or Ipswich (with same-day bookings available).

Just call, book, and get your mobile roadworthy certificate.

It’s that simple.

What Does an Inspection Include?

Every roadworthy inspection has 2 stages: a visual inspection and a road test.

Here’s what our examiners check cars and motorcycles for.

  • Seats and restraints
  • Lights and electrical components
  • Windscreen and windows
  • Body, chassis and frame
  • Tow couplings
  • Steering and suspension
  • Wheels and tyres
  • Brakes
  • Engine, driveline and emissions
  • Vehicle safety features
  • Vehicle identifier features
  • Modifications
  • Specific road test criteria, like windscreen wiper effectiveness and exhaust noise levels

Trailers and caravans have fewer checks and don’t need to be road-tested.

Once we’ve checked and tested your vehicle, we’ll issue an on-the-spot report and, if you pass, a roadworthy certificate.

Roadworthy Certificates for Motorbikes

Motorcycles and scooters have fewer checks than cars, but getting a roadworthy isn’t always easy for older or modified bikes.

Our approved examiners can help you check for common rejection points like excessive exhaust noise, illegal tail tidies, and non-compliant headlight positions.

If something’s not up to scratch, they can undertake basic repairs or replacements on site – or schedule a visit from one of our mobile mechanics within the next 14 days.

More About Roadworthies for Bikes

Roadworthy Certificates for Caravans

If your caravan has an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) of 750–4,500 kilograms, you’ll need a roadworthy certificate before you can transfer your registration.

ATM is the total mass of your caravan plus the maximum load recommended by the manufacturer, measured when your caravan isn’t hitched to a vehicle.

Caravans with an ATM of less than 750 kilograms don’t need a safety certificate – fill out a vehicle details inspection sheet instead.

Caravans with an ATM of more than 4.5 tonnes need a certificate of inspection instead.

Roadworthy Certificate FAQs

What is a roadworthy certificate for a car?

A roadworthy certificate (legally known as a ‘safety certificate’) is a document that proves your vehicle has been assessed as safe to drive by an approved examiner. You normally need a certificate to transfer or re-register your vehicle.

Roadworthy certificates can be digital or handwritten. Each one includes:

  • a unique certificate number
  • your vehicle’s details
  • the details of the approved inspection station (such as us) and examiner (such as one of our staff)
  • the inspection date and time
  • the odometer reading at the time of inspection
  • confirmation of the checks conducted.

All certificates are lodged with the Department of Main Roads and Transport. Roadworthy certificates don’t need to be displayed anymore, even if they’re handwritten (although some examiners may still have outdated blue certificates that mention a display requirement).

Can you sell a car without a roadworthy certificate?

You can sell a car in Queensland without a roadworthy certificate – but only in 2 scenarios. If your vehicle isn’t registered, you don’t need a roadworthy certificate to sell it (although the buyer will need one if they want to drive it on the road). You also don’t need a roadworthy certificate to sell your vehicle to a licensed motor dealer.

Just transferring instead of selling? You’ll still need a roadworthy certificate, except if you’re:

  • based in an exempt remote area (but, if you’re reading this in South East Queensland, you’re not in an exempt area)
  • transferring a vehicle from a deceased estate to a beneficiary
  • transferring a vehicle to your spouse.
How long does a roadworthy certificate last?

For anyone who isn’t a licensed motor dealer, roadworthy certificates are valid for 2 months or 2,000 kilometres (whichever expires first) from the date of issue.

You can use the same roadworthy certificate to register a car and then sell/transfer it, but you can’t use the same roadworthy certificate for more than one sale/transfer. Each new transfer needs a new roadworthy certificate.

What is an AIS?

An approved inspection station (AIS) is a provider that is qualified to provide safety certificates (that is, roadworthy certificates) in Queensland. The AIS scheme is a government scheme that mandates AISs meet certain business and operational requirements.

AISs can be qualified to provide certificates for light motor vehicles, light trailers, and motorcycles (as well as certificates of inspection for light motor vehicles, motorcycles, heavy motor vehicles, and heavy trailers). Some AISs can also offer mobile inspection services and online inspection certificates.

We’re registered as an AIS under the name ‘East Coast Mobile Safety Certificates’ (you can search for us here). We’re qualified to supply all varieties of safety certificates and COIs, and can provide both mobile inspection services and online certificates.
