What Is a Logbook Service?

A logbook service helps keep your vehicle’s warranties intact.

It’s like a general service, but with specific maintenance actions that must be completed at certain time/distance intervals.

Most vehicles need logbook servicing every 10,000 kilometres travelled – ‘major’ logbook services are scheduled every 40,000 kilometres or so.

Logbook services vary between vehicles and intervals, but, generally, yours will include:

Engine oil and filter replacements

Brake inspections

Tyre inspections

Fluid level inspections and adjustments

Spark plug and battery inspections

Light, horn, washer and wiper checks

Logbook Servicing FAQs

Doesn’t my vehicle’s manufacturer need to provide logbook services?

No. Any qualified independent repairer can service your vehicle.

Historically, some manufacturers made misleading claims that your warranty would be voided if someone other than them serviced your vehicle. Today, statements like that are considered a breach of the Australian Consumer Law. The ACCC has ruled that any independent repairer can service a vehicle without voiding its warranties.

Keep in mind that, if your mechanic does damage your vehicle during a service, any repairs won’t be covered by your manufacturer’s warranty (although they will be covered by the mechanic’s insurance). Choose a reputable, well-established workshop like Mobile Tyre & Auto Team to avoid any problems.

Is a logbook service worth it?

Yes, a logbook service is worth it. Why? Because it can help preserve your vehicle’s warranties.

There are four main types of guarantees available for cars:

  • your consumer rights, which are guaranteed automatically by the Australian Consumer Law
  • warranties against defects (also known as a manufacturer’s warranty)
  • express warranties, which guarantee any additional promises (such as performance capabilities) that manufacturers make
  • extended warranties, which extend manufacturer’s warranties.

Your consumer rights are automatic and can’t be removed, replaced or otherwise changed. But warranties are voluntary promises made by manufacturers – and may come with certain conditions.

Often, one of those conditions is that qualified professionals service your vehicle at times specified in your logbook (logbook services). Another common condition is that high-quality parts be used in any replacements or repairs, although these may or may not need to be genuine manufacturer parts.

What is the difference between a logbook service and a normal service?

A logbook service is delivered at certain intervals specified in your vehicle’s logbook. Most vehicles have specific checks that need to be undertaken during logbook services. Once a service has been completed, your mechanic will sign or stamp your logbook, which can help preserve your vehicle’s warranties.

‘Normal’ or general services fall into two buckets: minor services and major services. Minor services take place every 10,000 kilometres or so include checking things like your oil, brakes, lights, tyres, and suspension. Major services take place every 100,000 kilometres or so and are more comprehensive, covering transmission oil changes, spark plug replacements, differential services, and other important checks.

Logbook services and general services are very similar. The big differences are that logbook services help maintain your vehicle’s warranties and must include manufacturer-specified checks and changes.

How much is a car service on the Gold Coast?

The price of a car service on the Gold Coast depends on the mechanic you go to, the type of service you need, and the type of car you have. Non-European hatchbacks and sedans are generally the cheapest type of car to service. Euros, 4X4s, and EVs like Teslas are more expensive – parts are typically pricier and the servicing can be more complex.

According to Canstar, the average car logbook service in Queensland costs $403 – although that’s probably inflated by some expensive outliers. If you drive a non-Euro sedan or hatchback, expect to pay under $300 for a minor logbook service.
