In Queensland, taxis, limousines, and rideshare vehicles are classed as personalised transport vehicles – which means you need a COI to operate.
To get certified, you’ll need to book an inspection with an approved inspection station like us.
A COI lasts for 12 months – and, once yours expires, you’ll need to get another to keep driving.
It’s not just the government that requires you to hold a COI, either.
Uber, DiDi, Ola and Shebah all require their drivers to have valid COIs, which you’ll generally need to provide before being accepted as a driver.
Getting your taxi or rideshare car inspected?
Here’s what you can expect our approved examiners to check.
We’ll also road-test your car to assess things like exhaust noise levels and windscreen wiper effectiveness.
After completing a visual check and a road test, we will issue a Certificate of Inspection (COI). If your vehicle does not meet the required standards, you will receive a COI that indicates a fail, along with an inspection report detailing the necessary fixes.
Should your vehicle fail, you have the opportunity to rectify the defects and request a reinspection within 14 days.

Under the Queensland government’s AIS scheme, approved examiners (like us) can provide seven types of inspections:
You’ll need to get your COI from an AIS that provides CL inspections if you drive a taxi, limousine, or rideshare vehicle for companies like Uber, DiDi and Ola.
Yes, you need a valid certificate of inspection if you’re an Uber driver. Personalised transport vehicles vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes – like rideshare cars – are legally required to have a current COI at all times, unless they’re exempt.
Reasons for exemption include:
Uber itself also requires that you be able to pass a vehicle inspection – which, for rideshare vehicles, is a COI inspection.
If you want to be an Uber driver, your vehicle needs to meet Uber’s requirements, which are:
An approved inspection station (AIS) is a provider that is qualified to provide safety certificates in Queensland. The AIS scheme is a government scheme that mandates AISs meet certain business and operational requirements.
AISs can be qualified to provide safety certificates for light motor vehicles, light trailers, and motorcycles (as well as certificates of inspection for light motor vehicles, motorcycles, heavy motor vehicles, and heavy trailers). Some AISs can also offer mobile inspection services and online inspection certificates.
We’re registered as an AIS under the name ‘East Coast Mobile Safety Certificates’ (you can search for us here). We’re qualified to supply all varieties of safety certificates and COIs, and can provide both mobile inspection services and online certificates.
An approved inspection station (AIS) like us can’t inspect vehicles over certain gross vehicle mass (GVM) limits. (GVM is the maximum manufacturer-recommended laden weight of your vehicle.) Those GVM limits are:
If you need a COI for a vehicle we can’t inspect, book an inspection with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
