In Queensland, you need a safety certificate for your car when you transfer or re-register it.
A safety certificate is a document provided by an approved inspection station (like us) that says your car is roadworthy.
It’s not as comprehensive as something like a pre-purchase inspection, but it does give buyers peace of mind that their new purchase is fit to drive.
Without a certificate, you could be fined over $700, and getting one isn’t complicated.

Any vehicle under the right gross vehicle mass (GVM). Anywhere across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, or Ipswich.
All cars and other vehicles up to 4,500 kilograms GVM
Any make or model of motorbike, including modified bikes
Trailers and caravans with aggregate trailer masses of 750–4,500 kilograms
Taxis, rideshare vehicles, limousines, and hire vehicles up to 4,500 kilograms
Vehicles with 10 or more seats up to 4,500 kilograms
Public and school vehicles up to 4,500 kilograms
Trailers and caravans up to 10,000 kilograms
Mobile homes and motorhomes up to 16,000 kilograms
Tow trucks up to 4,500 kilograms and other trucks up to 16,000 kilograms
Certain classes of vehicles – like passenger vehicles, trucks, prime movers, heavy trailers, and motorhomes – need certificates of inspection (COI) instead of safety certificates.

A safety certificate is a document that proves your vehicle has been assessed as roadworthy by an approved examiner. You normally need a certificate to transfer or re-register your vehicle.
Safety certificates can be digital or handwritten. Each one includes:
All certificates are lodged with the Department of Main Roads and Transport. Safety certificates don’t need to be displayed anymore, even if they’re handwritten (although some examiners may still have outdated blue safety certificates that mention a display requirement).
You can sell a car in Queensland without a safety certificate – but only in 2 scenarios. If your vehicle isn’t registered, you don’t need a safety certificate to sell it (although the buyer will need one if they want to drive it on the road). You also don’t need a safety certificate to sell your vehicle to a licensed motor dealer.
Just transferring instead of selling? You’ll still need a safety certificate, except if you’re:
For anyone who isn’t a licensed motor dealer, safety certificates are valid for 2 months or 2,000 kilometres (whichever expires first) from the date of issue.
You can use the same safety certificate to register a car and then sell/transfer it, but you can’t use the same safety certificate for more than one sale/transfer. Each new transfer needs a new safety certificate.
An approved inspection station (AIS) is a provider that is qualified to provide safety certificates in Queensland. The AIS scheme is a government scheme that mandates AISs meet certain business and operational requirements.
AISs can be qualified to provide safety certificates for light motor vehicles, light trailers, and motorcycles (as well as certificates of inspection for light motor vehicles, motorcycles, heavy motor vehicles, and heavy trailers). Some AISs can also offer mobile inspection services and online inspection certificates.
