Your brake pads are 2 small slabs that grip your brake rotors (the discs attached to your wheels) when you hit the brakes.
That creates friction, turning your wheels’ kinetic energy into heat and slowing down your car.
Over time, the braking process wears down your pads – which leads to less effective braking.
If your brake pads are less than 3 millimetres thick, or if you hear squealing or grinding when braking, it’s time for a change.
We recommend Bendix brake pads (which come with manufacturer warranties), but can install any manufacturer-approved pads of your choice.

Brakes work through hydraulic pressure.
When you hit the brake pedal, brake fluid travels from the master cylinder down your brake lines, forcing the pads/shoes into contact with the discs/drums.
But, if your brake fluid contains water or air, it won’t compress the way it should – which can lead to a delay in braking force.
As part of your brake service, we’ll analyse your brake fluid’s integrity and replace it as required.
Vacuum-bleeding is suitable for small air pockets, but very old or contaminated fluid normally needs a full flush.
Our mobile mechanics will exchange your fluid on site, which means you don’t have to worry about getting rid of anything.
Your braking system is more than just pads and brake fluid.
When our mobile brake specialists check your vehicle, they’ll cover everything from the calipers and discs to the pedal and master cylinder.
That process includes standard visual inspections and test driving, plus an automated diagnostic test and fluid analysis.
If your discs or drums need changing, we’ll let you know – replacing a disc or drum is safer (and often cheaper) than machining it.

A full brake service normally includes:
You should get your brakes checked every 6 months or so. That doesn’t mean you need a standalone brake service – your mechanic will check your braking system as part of a general service.
Brake fluid normally needs to be changed every 2 years or so. Most brake fluids – DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 – are hygroscopic, which means they absorb moisture when exposed to air. This is a feature, not a bug (unabsorbed water in your brake system leads to corrosion), but oversaturated brake fluid leads to soft, spongy braking. Your braking system can also build up air pockets, which have a similar effect.
Brake pads should be replaced when they wear down to 3 millimetres or less. When you hear a high-pitched squeal while braking, it could be your brakes’ wear indicators – built-in metal tabs that let you know it’s time for a pad change.
Yes, it’s worth getting your brakes serviced. If your braking system isn’t working properly, your vehicle won’t stop when you tell it to, and that’s a big problem for you and other people on the road.
Your brake pads and brake fluid will need to be changed multiple times over the course of your vehicle’s life, so getting regular brake services – either standalone or as part of logbook/general services – is critical for your on-road safety.
Brake warning lights come in two varieties:
Brake system warning light | ABS warning light |
The brake system warning light appears on your dashboard if there’s a problem with your brake system, if your brake fluid is low, or if your parking brake (handbrake) is on.
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light appears when there’s a problem with your ABS or brake assist (BA) system.
Your ABS is a computerised system that helps prevent your wheels from locking up (that is, completely stopping while your car continues to move forward, resulting in a skid); it automatically pumps your brakes for you, which helps you stop faster and more safely.
Brake assist is a bit different. It’s a smart system that can differentiate between slow, light braking (around a corner, for example, or in traffic) and hard, emergency braking. When you slam the brakes hard, brake assist automatically maxes out the clamping power of your calipers, rather than waiting for your foot to fully descend to the floor.
Both systems are incredibly important for safe, effective braking. If you see the brake system warning light or ABS warning light appear on your dashboard, book a mobile brake inspection as soon as possible.
